The Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine was the nation’s first program established to prevent and control globally important diseases of food animals and humans. The department combines the disciplines of veterinary microbiology, epidemiology, immunology, parasitology, public health, production medicine, and clinical medicine and provides the provides the major agricultural and public health focus for the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Mission Statement

Mission is to create an environment that promotes excellence in teaching, research and service through innovation and discovery. The department imparts knowledge and skills in infectious diseases, encourages lifelong learning, conducts basic and applied research focused on animal and human health, participates in professional and community service, and partners with stakeholders to address societal needs..

We accomplish our mission through the dedicated service of our people to shape the next generation of veterinarians and produce impactful patient care and research .


Programme Objectives

The purpose of a public health intervention is to prevent and mitigate diseases, injuries and other health conditions. The overall goal is to improve the health of populations and increase life
Public health aims are achieved through surveillance of cases and the promotion of healthy behaviors, communities and environments. Analyzing the determinants of health of a population and the threats it faces is the basis for public health


Programme Philosophy

To produce well nurtured graduate that will be in a possition to contribute to the advancement of knowledege at local, National and Global levels.
